“Alzheimer’s Prevention Strategies Validated” is a recent article posted by David Perlmutter, MD, Board-Certified Neurologist on his website. He has reported on the findings of an important large study not being covered in the media.
Findings of an important large study not being covered in the media
Described as a comprehensive landmark study, it looked at whether Alzheimer’s is preventable. It appeared in the prestigious Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.
The study includes 45,000 people, their lifestyle choices, and an important set of conclusions about how lifestyle relates to the increased risk for Alzheimer’s.
In addition, what is of personal interest is Dr. Perlmutter’s statement regarding a pharmaceutical which caused Mother to become very sick – and thus, changed the course of my life. It is at least the second major research study which Dr. Perlmutter has reported on regarding this same medication: Aricept.
Reported in a publication of The American Medical Association – November 2018
In December 2018, he included results of an extensive meta-analysis about the leading Alzheimer’s medications. This study included 2714 participants and was published in November 2018 by JAMA Network Open – a publication of The American Medical Association.
The study found that the medication – which Mother had been prescribed at the time of diagnosis – not only does not help, but actually worsens cognitive function.
To summarize the findings, Dr. Perlmutter stated in his post, Alzheimer’s Drugs Worsen Cognitive Function:
- “…the very drugs that are being prescribed across our country and indeed around the world with the idea that they are somehow going to treat Alzheimer’s disease are actually associated with a more aggressive decline in cognitive function.”
And now – reported in The Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry
Again in 2020, the outcome of this second major research study cautions against “acetylcholinesterase inhibitor drugs.” In Dr. Perlmutter’s words:
- These are drugs like donepezil (Aricept®) that are marketed as an “Alzheimer’s treatment.” There is a tendency for these drugs to be prescribed for cognitive decline even before the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is made. But not only do these drugs offer no benefit to the Alzheimer’s patient, these researchers caution against their use in the early stages of cognitive decline stating that they “should not be used for Alzheimer’s disease prevention in cognitively impaired individuals.”
And yet the drugs continue to be marketed around the globe!
