It was 2012 – the first Food Revolution Summit had been presented to an online audience in April of that year and I was excited to be present! For a period spanning 14 years, I had been with my parents in my hometown in their final years. I had made every effort to enhance our lifestyle together at the ranch through real life pleasures such as good food and being together at the table. So, of course, I would not have missed this program.
Food is medicine
We the ranchers had always had good appetites prior to Mother’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s in 1997. But it was a food-as-medicine approach which finally brought healing for her body-mind-spirit following a long period of reliance upon big pharma. Aricept, the medication most frequently prescribed for Alzheimer’s, was determined to be the cause of her unchecked nausea in the year prior to my arrival.
Food for life
I had immediately immersed myself in a “food for life” approach to support Mother’s healing. During this experience, I also made an incorrect assumption – that with the growing body of evidence, everyone must be in about the same place in understanding the importance of food! … Especially a good friend, an educator with advanced degrees.
Does what you eat matter?
So, upon returning to my condo in Chicago in late 2012, I was somewhat taken aback when she asked: “So you think that what you eat matters in how you feel…?” It was a sincere question. She was making the connection about food, how we feel and act on a daily basis, and our overall health status.
It became part of my mission to share the constantly-emerging new information about food-as-medicine. This information is in stark contrast with the prevailing big pharma environment and “sick care” treatment of our early days and weeks together!
My mission would also be about real whole food as a real life pleasure, served up at an inviting table with Mother’s silver at every place setting. And … every meal treated as “joie de vie” – a celebration of coming together at the table.
