I learned about The Chalice and The Blade during a 1987 dinner meeting of Women in Management in Chicago’s downtown chapter. The book is now considered a classic. It is an important historical review of the shaping of human culture, comparing two basic models of society – the dominator model and the partnership model. The vast scope of this research has identified new possibilities for creating a more humanistic world. This scholarly work impacted my experience and world view in the years which followed.
Fast forward to June 2010
Upon learning that the author, Riane Eisler, would be joining Marianne Williamson to speak at an upcoming event, I knew I would be there! They would be headlining a women’s summit in an international teleconference with thousands of participants from around the globe.
Mother and I sat close to the kitchen table for this internet presentation and listened together. We both knew that something very important was taking place. And we both laughed at the completion of the telecast as I gathered up all the yellow-lined sheets of paper with notes taken during the stunning presentation.
This broadcast would surely create a global shift! As an attorney and international spokesperson for the rights of women and children, Riane had once again captured my attention. Actually, she had captured “our” attention. This time – it was in the company of my mother who shared in my excitement as we listened together in her final days – at her kitchen table. She had caught my excitement. I am convinced that – at some level – she understood that the subject discussed was part of an important transition in our history.
In 2018, the book was named Amazon #1 Best Seller in Women’s Studies History.
