When I first posted the article in April 2022, I was struck by the many nuggets of wisdom which it contained and which were showing up as societal deficits in the early years of the pandemic. Due to how older people were affected by the pandemic, these deficits had become more visible and far more pronounced than previously regarded.

Would older people continue to be invisible, ignored, and largely discounted by society following these initial revelations? Reading the article today as I’m drawing attention to it once again, I wonder just how much our societal response to aging has changed during these years.

Lynn Casteel Harper, a minister for older adults at the Riverside Church in New York City, says a big part of her job is “being with people one-on-one in their homes, at the bedside in hospitals or nursing homes, or on the phone, these days on Zoom, and journeying with them through the critical junctures of their life.” (Travis Tanay)

Courage. If we have the courage to take in the content of this article published in KHNreally take it in! – then, can we help but be startled into thinking in new paradigms?!

Our challenge is to grasp the message – then walk a mile in the shoes of the older person! Only then can we experience the richness found in engaging with older people.
